Alro invested over USD 61 million for technological and environmental projects this year

Slatina, 23 September 2008 - Alro SA (BVB: ALR), the largest aluminium producer in Central and Eastern Europe, invested over USD 61 million in technological and environmental projects by 30 June 2008 against a total budget of USD 63 million for the full year. The investments are in line with the company’s strategy to focus on offering its clients high-added value products and also allow it to strengthen its competitiveness through increased productivity and efficiency.

“Over the past six years, Alro has implemented a strategy of focusing on sophisticated products, following trends in the international markets”, said Gheorghe Dobra, General Manager of Alro SA. “As a result, we have been constantly increasing the output of processed products, transforming from a commodity supplier to a value-added manufacturer. We are committed to working closely with our customers to develop new products that meet their needs. A number of new products, recently added to our range, will be exhibited at the Aluminium exhibition in Essen, Germany, which begins today.”

In the first half of this year, Alro’s cast aluminium production increased by 3.7% compared to H1 2007 and the output of processed products increased by 39%. This year, Alro also commissioned the modernized cold rolling mill, following a USD 4.8 million investment. The state-of-the-art technology that has been installed will double the mill's capacity to 36,000 tpa and also improve the production quality for coils and sheets. Between 2002 and 2007, Alro has invested over USD 210 million in technological and environmental projects. As a result, production has increased from approx. 180,000 tpa, to 283,000 tpa, while the productivity per employee has increased by 80%.

Alro continues to invest in health and safety programs for its employees and has a USD 4 million budget for the current year. Moreover, the company has a USD 2.5 million budget for specific CSR projects, including health and safety, education and sports. This year’s program began with the donation of five ambulances, fully equipped for emergency aid, to the local Ambulance Service in Slatina.
