Promoting Recycling

ALRO is the only primary aluminium and aluminium alloys producer in Romania and is among the largest vertically integrated aluminium producers in Europe by production capacity. A key strategic objective for ALRO is the acquisition and processing of aluminium waste and ingots. This initiative is essential for cost optimization and aligns with the company’s commitment to supporting the circular economy. ALRO operates in compliance with its environmental management certification, EN ISO 14001:2005, demonstrating its dedication to responsible environmental practices.

Companies interested in participating in ALRO’s circular economy project are encouraged to contact ALRO using the provided contact details or via email at recycling@alro.ro.

In pursuit of its sustainable development goals, ALRO launched the Eco-Recycling initiative in 2013. This project, which is currently expanding, aims to reach a capacity of processing approximately 100,000 tonnes of aluminium waste per year by the end of 2023. The Eco-Recycling initiative plays a crucial role in ALRO’s circular economy efforts, enabling the company to handle and process large volumes of aluminium waste with various specifications. The primary restriction for this waste is its contamination level, which must not exceed 2% in terms of dust, plastic, and other contaminants. ALRO’s Procurement and Logistics Department is actively strengthening its supplier network. This database includes specialized European companies as well as local suppliers from Romania, all of whom recognize the benefits of partnering with a prominent and trusted entity like ALRO.

ALRO continuously implements eco-efficiency and safety measures throughout its production processes and is actively involved in global environmental issues through cooperation with international organizations. This cooperation focuses on compliance with Best Available Techniques (BAT) requirements in the aluminum industry, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing the full range of pollutants generated at the company's sites.

The monitoring which is conducted in accordance with integrated environmental permits certifies that all emissions produced by the company fully comply with European Union standards and the best available techniques in the field.

The most significant environmental investments include: commissioning the aluminum alloy waste recycling plant, expanding the capacity of the ecological waste hall for handling unrecoverable waste, commissioning gas filtration and treatment facilities for the Casting and Eco-Recycling divisions, equipping cold rolling mill installations with filters that have a high retention coefficient for rolling oils, installing water recirculation and treatment stations in the Casting, Anodes, and Electro-Energetics sections, upgrading the combustion systems in furnaces that use natural gas.
